Sox Sentiment of the Day

"I see great things in baseball. It's our game - the American game. It will take our people out-of-doors, fill them with oxygen, give them a larger physical stoicism. Tend to relieve us from being a nervous, dyspeptic set. Repair these losses, and be a blessing to us."

--Walt Whitman

Healthy Habits for the Young Athlete

"If you put your peas in your mashed potatoes, they don't taste so bad."

--Jonah, age 10

Eating a well balanced meal is essential to your athlete on a regular basis but it is very important on game day.

On game day try to provide a meal two hours prior to game time. Create a meal that contains plenty of carbohydrates, protein and one that is low in fat. Fat can be hard to digest and increase a risk of a tummy ache so choose leaner meats and stay away from the high fat, fried foods as much as possible on game day.

Remember that providing children with healthy food choices is one of the keys to helping them reach their full potential and in most cases these food choices will stay with them the rest of their lives.

Healthy Habits for the Young Athlete

"Water is the only drink for a wise man."

--Henry David Thoreau

Dehydration- excessive loss of water from the body or from an organ or bodily part.

In the life of every young athlete it is important to make sure he or she is properly hydrated. In general one cup of fluid or water is needed for every 20 to 30 minutes of physical activity. The key in avoiding dehydration is to drink before thirst sets in.

Sports drinks are designed to provide energy and replace electrolytes such as sodium and potassium that athletes tend to lose in sweat. Although sports drinks are popular and taste good water is a sufficient source to keep kids hydrated.

Typically your child has enough carbs to serve as energy for up to 90 minutes of exercise. In any case lost electrolytes can be replenished by a good well balanced meal after physical activity.

It is best to avoid soda as a source of hydration. Caffeine can act as a diuretic and lead to an increased risk of dehydration.

With all the choices out there to keep our bodies hydrated it seems the best source is the most natural and obvious choice. Water, it is what we are made of.

Healthy Habits for the Young Athlete

"The higher your energy level, the more efficient your body. The more efficient your body, the better you feel and the more you will use your talent to produce outstanding results."

--Anthony Robbins

Nutrition plays a key role in the life of a young athlete. Food is the fuel that produces energy needs for your child and helps in maximizing their physical, emotional, academic and spiritual potential.

I have heard it said that we must begin to see ourselves as a soul with a body and not a body with a soul. It is important that our children see their bodies as a gift and gain a knowledge of being a good steward of that gift.

Our role as parents is to teach and model a healthy approach to living. Those tools will not only benefit your child on the field but off as well. What parent wouldn't want a child to be dedicated to making healthy choices not only with food but other aspects of living?

Looking at our health in a proper perspective not only holds us to a higher standard but gives our children a better chance at a full and energetic life now and in the future.

As we continue this season, a better season, may we learn together to be dedicated not only to the lessons baseball can instill but dedicated to a better tomorrow through healthy choices that we make and pass on to our little athletes.
